Nast created the modern version of Santa Claus (based on the German figures of Sankt Nikolaus and Weihnachtsmann) and the elephant symbol used by the Republican Party. He is often credited with creating the images of Uncle Sam, Columbia (the female personification of American values), and the Democratic donkey. He did not create these, but they were popularized through his artwork.
