Afonso I was the first King of Portugal. He achieved the independence of the southern part of the Kingdom of Galicia, the County of Portugal, from the King of LeΓ³n, in 1139. The monarchy of Portugal was disolved following the October 5th, 1910 revolution, and Manuel lived the rest of his life in exile in Middlesex, England.
