Volunteer State is Tennessee's official nickname and appears on its license plates. It is also known as the "Big Bend State", the "Butternut State" (refers to the tan color of the uniforms worn by Tennessee soldiers in the American Civil War), the "Hog and Hominy State", and "The Mother of Southwestern Statesmen".
